From the moment the series opened– season one episode one–I was hooked. The Pitt is a medical drama like no other I have seen. As someone who grew up with Grey’s Anatomy on television, this was a complete shock and an elevated view of a medical drama. As much as I love the character drama that is present in other shows, it sometimes overpowers the medicine and treatment of patients. This show focuses on the patients and a glimpse into a “day in the life” of health care workers, and this, combined with the medical content, keeps me glued to the show, craving more and more character information.
The series is credited as “the most realistic medical show” by ex doctors and EM physicians by IMDB, a website specializing in television and movie reviews. The series
highlights the lives of Pittsburgh doctors in an Emergency Trauma Medical Center, which they have nicknamed “The Pitt”. What makes this show so unique is the structure combined with the content. Every episode is the name of an hour and represents just 60 minutes in a 15-hour shift.
This really demonstrated the non-stop feeling health care workers have become accustomed to, highlighting the lack of breaks or time to just sit down. I feel the tension and stress as I lie on my couch with popcorn, worrying about a patient from the last episode or from their last ten minutes. Season one was groundbreaking and risky for a drama series, as it didn’t include any introduction to the characters or their backstory. The viewers found it out through the dialogue or stories mentioned through fellow characters. This really helped in making it feel more genuine. Small jokes being made and teasing each other showed that in midst of all the
traumas and stress, they are just people at work. The first season premiered Jan 9 2025 and was renewed just over a month later on Feb 14 2025. As of Feb 12 2026 they have released 6 episodes (or 6 hours of a shift) so far.
Season two features a 10 month time skip but keeps the same shift schedule and hospital location. After such a strong first season, I was worried that season two would fall short. However, the season lived up to the amount of cinematic chaos that it had in season one. They have kept the same momentum and quick turn around as they have been set for renewal with season three coming
out Jan 2027.
Even though it is only in its second season it is apparent how the doctors have developed and their traits change, especially as we get to watch them go through different stages of their residency and training. Though the time jump from season one to two was less than a year, I felt that these characters were as genuine from season one and it seems as if the series never stopped and simply continued off camera. If you love a good drama, action packed, educational or non stop show, this is perfect for you! You still have time to catch up in time for season two’s finale!
