On Nov. 25, the MLL (Multi Language Learners) community joined the day before break, to celebrate their own thanksgiving at IHS, to come together and have a break from school between students and family members of different cultures, where the current staff and MLL teachers Jordan Pirotto and Katherine Stephens organized the event for their students and family.
The gathering represented a moment where people of different cultures could share and bring food to celebrate the holiday. It was also the opportunity for the community to share their gratefulness and support by the school district for students whose first language is not English. This was especially prominent in how the school district helped implement learning. From various Asian cultures, showcasing classic forms of gastronomy from the Middle East and South Am erica, including how traditional foods are prepared on holidays, and how classes explored specifics of places such as Korea, Russia, Turkmenistan, Peru, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Ukraine.
From enjoying food and company, even the little activities were a hit! Many young and old students enjoyed the coloring pages put out for them. Other activities included bingo sessions with little prizes for the winners in each round. IHS staff member Ana Reyes shares her thoughts about the event and gives insight into the positive benefits of these multicultural activities. “I love the idea of inviting students to be part of post school activities but also family members. It gives everyone a chance to get to know each other and share a little moment made for them.” Reyes also adds that it is a good idea to implement these kinds of events between classmates because it enriches the community and promotes equity.
Overall, the MLL Thanksgiving event was a wonderful experience for families and students alike. The chance to celebrate Thanksgiving, a time that is meant to be grateful for all experiences and memories with loved ones, is something that represents the moment of union to share together. It is a sign of peace and a moment dedicated to expressing our gratitude, a simple but powerful message.
