On Tuesday Apr. 21, the Issaquah boys soccer team competed in a hard- fought game against the Skyline Spartans, with the Spartans winning 4-1. This season is especially notable as this is the first year the team is working with new head coach, Mark Kovats. So far, the team has adapted to this change and had a strong season, with a record of 4-2 in league play. According to MaxPreps, as of now, their only losses have been to Newport and Woodinville, leaving Issaquah fourth place in KingCo Rankings. The KingCo bracket has shown to be one of the most competitive for boys’ soccer in Washington, increasing each game’s level of importance over time as teams compete for the top spot in the league and work to advance themselves in district play.
The game kicked off at 7:00 pm with the boys traveling to Spartan Stadium. Within the first 30 seconds of the game, Skyline found its way down the field and into Issaquah’s half. Skyline efficiently created chaos early on, leaving Skyline’s players trying to score a goal and Issaquah’s players working desperately to clear the ball quickly. Unfortunately, as commotion occurred, the ball bounced around aimlessly between both teams, resulting in the ball hitting off one of Issaquah’s players. The play ended in an own goal, giving Skyline a 1-0 lead. Within the blink of an eye, Issaquah’s goalkeeper was retrieving the ball out of their own net. Despite this, the Eagles didn’t let this moment affect their energy. Team leaders such as Senior Issac Jun and others brought the ball back to the center mark confidently and worked to get past their brief disappointment and move forward.
Soon after the Skyline’s early goal, the ball dropped onto the ground in the 18-yard box, and after just one bounce, Senior James Hutson volleyed the ball into the bottom right corner of the net, scoring Issaquah’s first and only goal of the night,; making the score 1-1.
Inevitably, although Issaquah gained momentum and began to connect more passes, take more opportunities, and become more cohesive on defense, the Spartans gained another goal through a corner kick just before halftime. However, just before halftime, the Spartans transformed their momentum into a goal-scoring opportunity by gaining a corner kick. The ball soared through the air from the outside of the field into the back of the net, without any player of either team touching the ball. With Skyline leading by one goal going into halftime, Issaquah headed into the locker room to regroup and strategize and overcome some of the challenges presented and endured through the past 45 minutes.
After the ten-minute halftime, Skyline began the second half with a strong, undeniable energy and remained composed all throughout the second half. Issaquah’s defense was working tirelessly to maintain possession and shut down the relentless offensive attacks of the opposing team’s front line. But after continuous attempts, Skyline managed to score two more goals, ending the game with an unlucky 4-1 loss for Issaquah. But as players such as Senior Carson Yamada have noted, coach Kovats continually “prepares [them] to be resilient during practices and games.”
The Eagles’ next game is currently unknown as District play is on the horizon. Be on the lookout for the updated schedule and show your support for the Issaquah boys soccer team on their playoff run!
