Outer Banks: Your New Favorite Show

On April 15, 2020, a new teen drama, “Outer Banks,” was released on Netflix. When I first saw this show appear on my Netflix home page a few days after its release, I scrolled past it without a second thought. It was not until a few days later that I began hearing about the show everywhere. Scrolling through Tik Tok, I saw videos about it, and on Instagram, I saw pictures of the cast and people boasting about how great it was. Later, I heard from some friends who were begging me to watch it. For instance, I received a text from my friend at 3 am saying,”I just finished the new show Outer Banks, YOU NEED TO WATCH IT!!!” That pushed me over the edge, I had to see what the hype was about.

The show has ten episodes, all around 40 minutes to an hour each. “Outer Banks” follows a teen boy and his three best friends on a tireless treasure hunt around their island to fulfill his father’s death wish. The show features an attractive cast of characters, most of the main characters I have never seen before in mainstream television such as this one. Other than the easily lovable cast, the show’s plot hooks you in within the first ten minutes of watching. I can attest to this as I finished the series in one day. Packed with blindsiding plot twists, “Outer Banks” will constantly have you on the edge of your seat and even have you getting emotional.

What I love about this show is how fast you connect to the characters. You follow each character’s storyline to learn about their background and where they come from, which you do not get with a lot of other shows. Another thing I admire is the realness of the characters; the leads come from lower-middle class households and have to work to earn money. However, along these lines, the way their lives are depicted as so carefree with no rules, it makes you want to live the life they are living, I think some people are even planning their next vacation to Outer Banks (yes it is a real place, I had to look it up too).

Now for the plot, SPOILER ALERT: the whole show really has you tossing and turning and racking your brain as to what may have happened to John B’s dad? And where is the gold? Is the treasure hunt even real? And are John B and Sarah gonna last? What is satisfying about the ending is it answers all these questions. John B’s dad was murdered, whether accidentally like Ward says, or on purpose. The gold was just where the treasure map had pinpointed it, John B’s dad was right all along. Just when we thought we were gonna get a happy ending, of course Ward had to come into the picture once again. As for the gold, it is now en route to the Bahamas after Ward found out of its whereabouts in the crazy old blind lady’s secret well in her basement. When we thought it could not get any worse, Sheriff Peterkin is shot by Rafe and the murder is pinned on John B. Luckily, after John B and Sarah’s dramatic get away, where I think everyone watching thought they were goners, we find out that they not only survived, but they are safe and in the viewpoint of a very large ship. After being picked up by the ship, we find out the captain is headed to Nassau, exactly where the gold is. This is how the show ends, leaving us with a massive cliff hanger. Will John B and Sarah make it to Nassau safely? Is the captain a part of Ward’s evil plot? With a season 2 not yet confirmed, we will have to pray that we find out these answers.
