Late Night Shows and The Coronavirus

Late Night Shows and The Coronavirus

Eric Bachman

With coronavirus putting the world into quarantine, people are finding themselves with lots of spare time. Some are using this time to further their hobbies or express themselves artistically. If you are like me, however, you have probably been watching a lot of talk and Late Night Shows. The issue is that these Late Night Shows have to adapt because they cannot go about work as usual due to coronavirus and the ban on mass meetings. A majority of the shows are doing their shows over call, but many are saying that that is taking away from the spirit of the shows. Naturally, some Late Night Shows are doing better off with these new situations than others. For example, “Stephen Colbert’s Late Night Show” seems much more put together than other shows like the “Conan O’Brien Show” or “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” This, I would say, is due to the nature of the shows. While Stephen Colbert tends to be more of a talk show, Conan O’Brien as well as Jimmy Fallon are both more reliant on interactive based interview shows. The same goes for “Saturday Night Live,” which focuses on skits as well as one celebrity host. It will be interesting to see how these shows evolve coming out of this epidemic, and whether or not this will change the Late Night Show industry.
