“UKNOWWHATIMSAYIN?” is a strange but delightful personal album

Danny Brown is a Detroit rapper who broke onto the scene with his album, “XXX,” in 2012. He is known for making experimental hip-hop with a dash of insanity and for infusing his deranged sense of humor into his lyrics. Brown has arguably been getting better with every release; his last album, “Atrocity Exhibition, received great critical and financial success. This time around might be different though, because Danny’s music was up until now heavily influenced by his rampant drug use, but he has now cleaned his act up completely. His new album, “UKNOWHATIMSAYIN?”, will be his first album after reforming himself.

So the first thing we have to get out of the way is the fact that this album–like much of Danny’s work–is an acquired taste. This album might honestly be too eccentric for some people, but I personally like it. I think that this new album might be his best one yet. The songs are a mix of distorted old school hip-hop with comical lyrics that secretly depict Danny’s struggle with control. These deeper layers are showcased on songs like “Theme Song,” in which Danny raps about the cyclical nature of his bad behavior. Lines like “Repent for my sins like, god I’m saved. He always forgive. Later on I forget,” show how he was stuck in a cycle of regret that kept repeating itself. This album is a dive into the mind of a man with an odd sense of humor and demons in his closet. Overall, I give it a strong eight out of ten.
