This season, the Issaquah High cross-country team took the program to new heights, as both the girls and boys dominated the state meet, taking second overall. The boys team made history, breaking the Issaquah High school record for fastest team ever. The talented group recently headed to the city of Pasco, Washington to run in their biggest meet of the year: the state championship. Hundreds of eager runners warmed up with their teams, trying to balance the inevitable adrenaline and nerves they were facing. The course was an unforgiving one and with the first mile being mostly uphill with rolling hills continuing throughout the course. However, throughout the difficulties, the energy remained electric. As Issaquah High School runners walked up to the starting line, they first circled up and performed their routine pre-race chant to get their energy up. Soon after the team finished their chant, the gun was shot, signifying the start of the race. Excited spectators held up colorful signs, cheering enthusiastically for their loved ones. Runners unlocked mental and physical strength they did not know they had as they struggled to reach the finish line. After the exhilarating race, runners headed back to the Issaquah High tent and were greeted by supportive and encouraging coaches and teammates.
The results from the state meet exemplified all the hard work that went in during Issaquah High School’s training throughout the season. Elena Gehrke, Sally Davis, Connor Rickey and Nate Laurson were the top finishers for Issaquah in their divisions, earning them all state honors, signifying that they finished top 50 in the whole state out of all divisions. Varsity 11th grade runner Nate Laurson states, “I’d say that our team has some of the best coaches in the state. They have a really good understanding on how to improve as an athlete.” With such a diverse cross-country staff and so many talented athletes, it is no surprise how the girls and boys Issaquah High school team have achieved so much this year.
However, Issaquah High School’s cross-country team will not stop here. They are not only proud of their accomplishments this season but are also looking to take strides in the post season to ensure another successful season in 2025. With lots of amazing senior athletes leaving Issaquah, it will be even more crucial for the team to stay motivated during the post season. Even through the unknowns, one thing remains certain: with the passion and perseverance Issaquah runners possess, there is no doubt they will continue to push boundaries and reach milestones for years to come.
