Homecoming season has started, and IHS kicked off their magical weekend with a Homecoming assembly on Sept. 27th. ASB put together a brilliant showcase of activities and clubs at IHS, including, cheer, the dance team, the marching band, ASB board members, and ASL club members.
The students piled in as the IHS marching band played their popular songs from football games and IHS fight songs. IHS starts off all ASB assemblies with a land acknowledgment giving credit to the native tribes located nearby IHS. When doing the national anthem, the ASL club and volunteers from ASL 3 to sign the national anthem to the student sections, promoting the inclusion of all different abilities and languages at our school.
The 2024 Homecoming theme was Night in Paris, ASB shared some Paris themed activities to help promote ticket sales and school spirit for the Homecoming weekend. A very common game for teen students is Dress to Impress, a Roblox game that involves stylizing a character for a certain topic and deciding who fits the theme the most. ASB did their own version of this game but heightened the competitive aspect by making it a race. Two duos fought to dress up and include the most amount of Paris themed clothing in the time frame. The buckets holding the clothes were located on the far side of the gym making the distance to hand off clothes extreme. After the contestants were all dressed up in their elegant and hilarious costumes, they walked a red carpet and received a rating from the
judges, three teachers with stars to hold up. The judges were highly qualified with Mr. Stevens saying, “Fashion is my passion.”
The second Paris themed activity was the “tour de France,” which included a limbo under a baguette, grabbing a cup of tea, getting a croissant and driving through the finish line that was the Eiffel tower. Mr. Brookshire and Mr. Fernandez were head-to-head in the tour de France race. Except this race had to be completed on a tricycle. This was not just for comedic purposes but for the added challenge of fitting adults into the kid’s toy contraption. When the race began, Fernandez had an immediate jolt of speed and passed Brookshire by a few seconds. As the tea spilled across the gym floor due to the rapid speed, the student sections focused in. After the race, Fernandez was awarded a medal to wear for the rest of the assembly.
The performances done at the assembly kicked off with a cheer routine. Cheer had an “Ice, Ice, Issy” themed performance with posters and stunts. IHS’s cheer team stands in front of the student section and keeps the audience excited to support our football team by sharing the well-known IHS cheers. For example, the Issaquah beat chant and the fight song. However, this year, new IHS cheer chants debuted at the assembly and at the Homecoming football game. After cheer was completed, the dance team took an excited run to the beginning poses of their Homecoming performance. The routine featured music from artists like Doja Cat and upbeat music to get the crowd excited. Sophomore Sara Niemen shares the preparation of the performance, saying, “We ran certain sections of the dance over and over until it was clean.”
The last moments of the assembly were focused on promoting some of the ASB activities to improve Homecoming and the events at the Homecoming game. This included information about the Miracle Minute to promote donations for the American Cancer Society, Homecoming Heroes, powder toss, and the Homecoming game. Thank you to ASB for making the homecoming assembly special, and happy Homecoming Eagles.
