On Wednesday, June 5, Issaquah High School’s gymnasium was the scene of an exhilarating contest as the annual staff versus students basketball game unfolded. This year’s matchup saw the staff team triumph over the students with a final score of 70-62, marking an eight-point victory in a game filled with skillful plays and spirited competition.
The game began with the students, under the leadership of senior head coach Roshy Rajesh and assistant coach junior PK Kumar, making an impressive start. Sophomore Adejare Adesanoye and junior Jett Chavis were instrumental in scoring early points, while senior Cole Cowan and senior Edrius Green showcased their defensive prowess. The first half was marked by fast-paced action and strategic plays, ending with the students trailing slightly, 35-32.
The staff team, coached by the formidable Jared Fernandez, displayed their experience and tactical advantage. Anthony Brown, the team’s towering presence, dominated the paint, scoring crucial baskets and securing rebounds. Joel Petersen used his physicality to guard effectively: while Robert Polk, despite his shorter stature, made several quick steals and assists. Kelly Kraft and Fernandez contributed significantly to the score, demonstrating their basketball skills honed over the years.
As the second half commenced, the students, featuring standout players like junior Annarose Eckmann-Manahan and senior Zach Ra, intensified their efforts. Eckmann-Manahan’s sharp shooting and Ra’s agility kept the students within striking distance. Junior Joni Lee, junior Lia Hanson, and senior Sebastian Powers played pivotal roles in maintaining the team’s momentum, while sophomore Thijs Van Diepen added to the defensive stability.
However, the staff team, driven by their determination to claim victory, pulled ahead in the final minutes. Fernandez’s leadership and tactical acumen, combined with Brown’s dominance and Petersen’s defensive efforts, sealed the game. The final buzzer confirmed a well-earned victory for the staff with a score of 70-62.
