“Chicken Nugget” a new Korean drama on Netflix directed by Lee Byeong-heon is a comedy that is based off of a Naver Webtoon. Plus Entertainment (production company) hops onto the bandwagon of changing webtoons into full TV shows as they add this one directly to Netflix. This comedy has its comedic elements causing me to laugh aloud or feel uncomfortable a couple of times. If you are bored and looking for something entertaining, I recommend watching “Chicken Nugget.”
With an interesting title like “Chicken Nugget,” many people (Including me) will click on the show to see what it is about. The overall synopsis is a love interest (Choi Min-ah) of the main character, Go Baek-Joong, turns into a chicken nugget by stepping into a mysterious machine that Baek-Joong had brought in earlier that morning. Not knowing what the machine does Min-Ah trys turning it on and gets turned into a chicken nugget. This concept is confusing and abstract. I have never seen another show’s concept around someone being turned into a chicken nugget, a chicken but not a chicken nugget.
The show is slow-paced in the beginning and almost hard to follow but near the end it picks up as a lot of random things happen. It gets a little confusing and the whole show is in Korean, so I had to pay attention to understand what they were saying. Originally, I thought this was just one of those shows that you could just turn on in the background and let run but after doing so it was extremely hard to follow. The character development was not my favorite as there was not a huge contrast from the beginning of the show to the end. Character development is something that these types of romances lack, and it was noticeable.
Also, randomly out of nowhere there is a racist comment that the show makes about the Prince of Saudi Arabia. This raised a lot of controversy around the show and dragged down the ratings because this was not something the scriptwriters should not put in the show.
In the end, “Chicken Nugget” is not the best for the actual wow factor of a show. Overall if you are just looking for something to pass the time this show is for that. It is not a show I would recommend watching for the actual interest in watching it. though I wish that the script writing, and overall show was better. Show your support for these abstract concepts and look out for newer ideas and shows that get represented out there.
