After six years of no new releases, Justin Timberlake released a brand-new album called “Everything I Thought It Was” on March 15. Timberlake fans have been eagerly waiting for the album to be released due to how long it has been since the previous album was released. Of course, they have high expectations. However, the long-anticipated arrival of the album was disappointing for some since “Everything I Thought It Was” was mediocre.
“Everything I Thought It Was” has 18 songs and lasts a total duration of one hour and 17 minutes. The album’s songs range in genre from pop to funk and to R&B. Despite the wide range of music genres that is typical of Justin Timberlake’s style, the music was off. As someone who is not really a listener to Justin Timberlake’s songs, to me, the music fell short of what it could have been. Many haters of the new album agree and believe that the album was rushed, bland, and unoriginal.
The album was also dedicated to Timberlake’s wife, Jessica Biel, and their kids. In the song “Conditions,” Timberlake sang “you are love” and I can assume that he was talking about Jessica and how she always stood by him even during tough times. However, some of the lyrics that were dedicated to Timberlake’s family were just a little unnecessary in the music since the emotions there were obvious.
When listening to Justin Timberlake’s brand-new album, it was easy to be distracted from the music since there was nothing to catch my attention. Although I could blame my lack of interest and attention on the fact that I am generally not an R&B listener, there was nothing that I could connect to. The songs were just so unimportant and uninteresting that I instantly lost interest. In some way, most of the songs generally sounded like something that I have heard before like when at the store or on the radio, so the music was not as interesting and new as I had hoped.
Although the album did not necessarily impress me, there were some songs, verses, and melodies that sounded pretty good. Overall, the album was mediocre, but that does not mean that you should not listen to it yourself. If you are interested in listening to “Everything I Thought It Was,” know that you can find it on any of your music and listening services like Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube.
