On Feb. 3, our Issaquah High School Dance Team attended a dance competition at Kentlake High School. The competition was full of confident and determined dancers that were bursting with energy. All the dance teams wore spectacular costumes, danced to empowering music, and had expressive faces that matched the tone of the music. There were tons of different dance styles from pom to military and hip hop to kick. Our Eagles competed in pom, dance, and hip hop.
Our Eagles performed beautifully in their pom performance with an incredible amount of energy. Everyone was full of smiles and confidence as they leaped and twirled across the dance floor. The teamwork and collaboration that the team had was awesome to watch; you could tell that a lot of hard work was put into practicing and training together. Senior Micki Korock says, “I think, personally, I’m really proud of how we did in all three. I think dance and pom were our really strong ones. I think we’ll be up there. We’ll see, we’ll see what happens. The only place we can go is up.” However, of course, all the dance teams were displaying a lot of enthusiasm when performing their pom dances.
Our IHS dance team was full of attitude, sass, and life as they danced along to their hip hop beats. The expressions on the Eagles’ faces portrayed confidence and strength as they danced with all of their might. Sophomore Pratishta Venkitesh says, “I really like our hip hop because I think it’s really fun and it’s fun to do all of the facials for hip hop. Even if it’s tiring, I think that’s something that motivates me to keep my energy up because it’s a fun dance and I want to do it justice. So, I think the whole team gets really hyped for hip hop and I think it’s fun to see how energetic we can be.”
Every school team danced with style, personality, and confidence. Some other school performances that caught the attention of the audience was Liberty High School’s military style performance that was super cool and fierce, and Pasco High School’s hip hop performance that nearly got a standing ovation and was full of sass and impressive acrobatics.
Although this event was a competition, all the teams were so supportive and cheered for each other. When a team finished their dance, they would be showered in applause from the audience and from the other teams. It was amazing to see that sportsmanship still thrives today.
As the end of the competition neared, it was time for the awards ceremony. Our Issaquah Eagles achieved second place in both dance and pom and eighth place in hip hop. Now that the results of the competition are out, the only way left to go is up. It is up to our Issaquah Eagles to take the judge’s comments to heart and improve in time for the next competition. Venkitesh says, “We will review the judges’ feedback. I think we’re going to get a lot of feedback, good and bad. So, we’re going to keep doing the good things and we’ll review and improve the bad things through lots of practices.”
With our Eagles flying higher and higher, show your support to our Issaquah Dance Team at their next dance competition on Feb. 24 at Capital High School.
