This illustration is called Reality, and it represents the poverty in California and kind of different ways to represent that. There are three sections; the first sections are cardboard signs filled with common messages that the homeless write and show to others, and I told the ones that are short, but have a lot of impact on the viewer because it’s important for the viewer to realize the reality of California. The second section is buildings in a red tone, and it shows the area that homeless live in, and the red is to emphasize the darkness, and the horror of living in the city like world, without any security or promises of survival. The last sections are comments, and they represent the assumptions that people make about the homeless, despite the reality being quite the opposite. The message that I want to show to my viewers is that homelessness is a dark reality in California, and it continues to grow over the years. These ideas that I came up with were influenced by my visits to California and having to walk around the main cities, it was filled with homeless people everywhere, and sometimes it got hard to walk around different places and I paid attention to some signs, and the one I remember is, “$1 short for a taco…” and so I included it into the illustration. Overall, the local concern in California is the growth of homelessness and the tragedy they must face today.
