Superhero film “The Marvels” made just 47 million in its first weekend, making it the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s lowest opening. Starring Brie Larson, Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris, the movie shadows the events of MCU’s 2019 “Captain Marvel” film. With revenue down 67% from the first film, analyst David A. Gross states, “This opening is an unprecedented Marvel box office collapse. Second superhero installments usually outperform the originals, and ‘The Marvels’ has some way to go to recoup its 220 million production cost.” These deficient views beg the question: What made “The Marvels” so bad?
The plot of “The Marvels” follows the average “superhero film standard.” Carol Danvers, AKA Captain Marvel, reclaims her identity from the tyrannical Kree and attempts to take revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. However, when her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with two other superheroes to form the Marvels. As an MCU fanatic myself, “The Marvels” was decent. The developed characters I had seen so many times before battled with new and old enemies, and I would lie in saying I did not enjoy it. Those not so familiar with the MCU, however, would have a little more trouble understanding the plot if they went in blind. The MCU has grown so much over the past years that to follow the storyline, you need to see ALL of the storyline – which consists of over 30 movies. Nothing made “The Marvels” a bad movie; nothing but the complexity of the hole MCU has dug for themselves, deterring new and old fans from their hasty expansions to the universe. Moreover, the “superhero film standard” that worked for MCU’s first 32 movies is getting old; fans are exhausted of the repetition that comes from MCU, and superhero films, in general. When even understanding the plot of “The Marvels” means watching 32 of essentially the same movie beforehand, the facts are simple: If you have not already seen MC movies “Ms. Marvel”, “Secret Invasion”, ”WandaVision”, “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, and “Captain Marvel”; Save your money, and do not watch “The Marvels.”
