On Nov 17, Issaquah High’s Girls’ Soccer team lost the State semifinals against Skyline’s team 0-2, marking the end of a season full of victories. Yet the dedication of the athletes and coaches has propelled this season forward, enabling the team to reach the uppermost reaches of high school competition.
The teams poured into Sparks Stadium on Friday evening, both teams high on energy from the passion they poured into the game throughout the season. Skyline pushed past Issaquah with penalty kicks, both in the first and second half of the game, taking home a victory that enabled them to advance to state finals. Issaquah put up a great fight, keeping their energy steady throughout the game and performing their best.
The season has been filled with growth, with Coach Jaci Matthews stating, “The girls faced a lot of adversity this season. They lost a lot of key players, [in fact two out of three captains were injured].” Despite these key players being out of commission, Coach Matthews goes on to say, “The girls were able to push through this adversity.” This growth and tenacity has brought them numerous accomplishments throughout the season, also facilitating the team’s great sportsmanship and bond. Coach Matthews says, “KingCo is extremely competitive, and the fact that we can compete at such a high level is a great thing.” Yet she also talks about how the team is more than competition, saying, “the girls’ team has great sportsmanship…I love seeing students outside the classroom set goals and work towards them.” This growth and connection seems to be the core of the girls’ team.
Senior Rani Leapould states, “I love the sense of community that the team has.” This is a big part of the team, with senior Sallie Thieme agreeing. Thieme says, “I love seeing my team every day and spending time with them.” Both athletes are quick to express their enthusiasm for the environment surrounding the IHS Girls’ Soccer Team, showing how tight-knit the community grows through continuous practices. The girls’ team not only performs at a high level, but also facilitates a welcoming community that enables all players to learn and grow together. Although the season has ended for the 2023-2024 school year, the Eagles’ Girls’ soccer team will continue playing next fall. Stay tuned to watch their journey throughout the next academic year!
