As Timothée Chalamet said, “SAG strike is over – YAY.” Saturday Night Live has been back for four weeks, featuring hosts Pete Davidson, Bad Bunny, and Nate Bargatze. But Saturday’s Nov. 11 episode was oat milk drinkers’ Superbowl, a peak for consumers of sad art everywhere – host Timothée Chalamet and musical guest boygenius. The announcement resulted in a slew of praise for whichever SNL intern was internet-versed enough to pitch a match made in heaven where the Holy Trio is Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus.
I have yet to be asked, but upon request I feel confident in my ability to quote Chalamet’s monologue in its entirety. The “Wonka” actor poked fun at the actors’ strike (making light of a dire situation because that is what comedians do), performed two songs-the second more unserious than the first-and interacted with the audience (Chalamet telling an audience member they smelled good resulted in a nationwide gasp).
The sketches had a rare rewatch quality, several already racking up over a million views on YouTube. Two generation-defining sketches from Chalamet’s first appearance on SNL were echoed, with a return of SmokedCheddatheAssGetta and tiny horse. Britney Spears (played by Chloe Fineman) promoted her new memoir with numerous spot-on celebrity impersonations auditioning to read it, the Kevin James and John Mulaney impressions were deserving of several awards. The magnum opus of this episode was a sketch that explored changing notions of celebrity through “Australian YouTube twink-turned indie pop star” Troy Sivan, featuring an appearance by boygenius. The rest of the episode could have been a toss, and I still would have called it a win with this five minutes and 10 seconds. However clever the sketches and however flawless the performances of “Not Strong Enough” and “Satanist” by boygenius were, there was a major mishap in the Please Don’t Destroy sketch, with Chalamet playing a failed musician by the name “Hamas” sending viewers into a frustrated frenzy on X. Toeing the line between insensitive and comedy, this is not the first time SNL has caused division and received a disappointed “Ooooooh” from audiences.
