“Spy kids Armageddon,” a movie released on Sept. 22, was added to the Spy Kids’ series as a reboot with a different cast and repetitive story line. Terrence and Nora, two kids who love to play video games, have parents that are secret spies (like the original movie) which later the kids find out. Now they must go on a secret mission to stop the antagonists from stealing the Armageddon code through a video game. The antagonist and creator of the game Ray Kingston tries to use the game to try and to get access to this powerful weapon. As the kids find out about their parents, it shows the unity of their family as they work together to save the day in the video game and attempt eliminate the antagonist.
This movie is flawed with poor costumes and a weird feeling in green screen, and CGI is the same as the original. In modern times this movie with a 35 million budget should have been better crafted. If this were a stand-alone movie, it would be horrible. The costumes lacked flair and looked more unprepared in this movie than others but brought back the same feeling of this child friendly movie. The background and sets of the movie felt nostalgic as they kept the same type of sets as in the video game world in the third movie. With this, the camera shots were also more modernized than the original movies and with the nostalgic background felt like I was watching a Spy Kids movie.
Even though it was intended to be an addition to the series, it felt more like a reboot, but according to The Guardian, Adriana Horton states, “Producers show they were developing this new family too add into the series.” They attempted to keep the storyline and pacing like the first three movies, but it felt very repetitive and a copy of the earlier ones. The actual story of the movie lacks a new purpose to the series because, first they already have a movie based off a video game taking over the world. Second, the same main theme of unity was used but represented worse. Overall, this movie could have been created better but it is just supposed to be a movie that parents can watch with their young kids.
If you are just looking for a movie that you can watch when you are babysitting kids, this would be a perfect movie. It is child friendly and if you are into Spy Kids’ movies overall it is nostalgic as it feels (costume and story wise) the same as the older ones, but if you do not want to ruin your memories about this series, then just, please do not watch it.
