“Moon Knight”: A Fine Addition to the Marvel Universe

Eli McCalmont, Staff Writer

On March 30, Marvel Studios released one of its newest and more thrilling projects called “Moon Knight.” “Moon Knight” initially follows a man named Steven Grant who is portrayed as just another normal person who works at a gift shop in England. However, we could not have been more wrong.

In the first few episodes, we come to realize that something is not right with Steven. For example, we kick off the show with him tied to his bed with an ankle restraint. We also see him talking to inanimate objects like a dummy of a street performer. Most importantly, he has a dream of himself meeting the main antagonist in the show, Arthur Harrow, and an Egyptian god, Khonshu. This sense of mystery and curiosity was key for my enjoyment of the show.

Another key factor in my enjoyment of the show was the relationship between Steven and a man named Marc Spector. Steven and Marc, it turns out, share the same body, but with different consciousnesses. Over the course of the show, Steven and Marc have to learn how to balance the control of their body, and maintain a steady relationship throughout. An interesting feature that Marvel has not really delved into much is a horror element. A few of the action scenes, such as Steven escaping the Jackal in the museum or Layla El-Faouly’s (Marc’s wife) fight against a few crazed priests within one of the Egyptian pyramids, are only a few examples of this horror element. Both of these scenes were really dark setting wise, and both of the attackers in these scenes looked maniacal, which added to the horror.

My favorite episode of the series was episode five because the relationship between Steven and Marc really took a wild turn. Secrets were revealed, and it was incredibly intense and heartbreaking for the viewers. It really took the viewer on an emotional rollercoaster. Another episode I thoroughly enjoyed was episode four because of its frequent action sequences and palpable intensity and fear of the characters.

Overall, this show has been a pleasant surprise for many people. For me, I was reluctant to begin watching this show due to the odd premise, but I am glad I gave it a chance. I really enjoyed the character development and relationships the show builds throughout. Even though Moon Knight may sound odd initially, it is definitely worth a watch.
