“Frail State of Mind:” Boring and Monotonous

Eric Bachman, Staff Writer

Do you like listening to a song so repetitive, so unoriginal, and so cliché, that you wished that you could make it stop, but is so repetitive you start falling asleep, unable to stop this music? If you do, The 1975’s new somehow hit single, “Frail State of Mind,” is for you! The song’s track sounds like the same two bars played over and over. They briefly pause as the singer, appearing lazy and unwilling to speak, much less sing, barely seems to get out the name of his song. Ironically, this group calls itself a rock group, which is an insult to old classic bands.

Going in, I already had low expectations. I did some research beforehand, and the group was releasing the song as a piece of the singles they are releasing as a warmup to their new album, “Notes on a Conditional Form,” to be released in 2020. However, if this song is any indicator of their next album, it’s bound to be an absolute mess. I would say I’d listen to it, but I honestly do not think I could stay awake throughout the entire thing.

The 1975 is not a lost cause, however. Their lyrics were certainly sub-optimal, but the idea behind the song was creative enough to hold potential. If the band’s lead singer actually put effort into singing and if they created a good lyric, and a more diverse melody, The 1975 might just have a chance yet. But considering their near nine million-listener count, that is extremely unlikely to happen.
