Students and members of the Issaquah School Board met in Issaquah High’s library on Oct. 21 to discuss equity in the school. Equity is the quality of treating and being treated fairly. Students were asked several questions by Donna Hood, the executive director of Issaquah School Systems. The questions related to their experiences in the school environment, and what they could possibly do to improve it. The goal of this meeting was for the board members to gain an insight into the students’ lives during the school hours, and come up with ways to ensure a safe and respectful school environment. Conversations were filled with talk about teachers roles in discussing potentially controversial topics, the use of pronouns, and white fragility after black history month last year.
