Rodeo: The Best Piece of Music From Travis Scott

Jake Crevin, Staff Writer

Travis Scott’s “Rodeo” album was his first signature album, and was really his “breakout” music. This album helped him gain recognition, including being the youngest person out of Houston to be at the Grammies. His hit songs from the album include ‘Antidote,’ ‘90210,’ and ‘Piss on Your Grave.’ His album includes features from high stage rappers such as Kanye West, Quavo, and Juicy J. This album was a very positive experience; it has the perfect balance of low-key chill music, but balances rap-style as well. This album really was one of a kind. I am used to listening to rap, like Drake for example, but when I listened to “Rodeo” I was surprised. It is really different and I like it. The vibe I got from the album gave me a feeling that I never felt before. The songs are very well produced, and the lyrics have so much meaning that I did not understand, it kind of connects you to his life and what he is going through. For example, in one of his verses in “90210” it says, “I’m turning Jacques to La flame.” This verse means that he is turning from his real-self to his alter ego know as La flame. This verse shows a connection between his life, and his alter ego music self.

The element that made this album so good was that he had the perfect people chosen for features. Their style of music blended well with Travis’s. One of my favorite songs on the album is “90210.” I love this song because it has two different types of music in one song. For the first part of the song, it starts out really chill, but halfway through, a beat switches up, and it becomes a full rap song. I always refer to this part of the song when “Travis snaps,” which is saying he goes off on the beat and really lets his inner self come-out within the music. One line from the song, “My granny called, she said Travie you work too hard I’m worried you’ll forget about me. I’m falling in-in-out like cars don’t worry imma get it granny.” This line correlates to his life when he started making it big, and his family was worried that he would fall into drugs.

Another line earlier in the song shows that he is adapting into the music world and culture after making it big. La flame is his nickname, and he named himself after his debut album, “Days before rodeo.” I think that the Theme of “Rodeo” is that he is getting a little help from his friends in a way, and that each song in the album is treated differently when it comes to the vocals of the song. While listening to this album, I only found one flaw. During the whole album, in the second half of the songs, he took it up a notch when it comes to rapping. Other people might enjoy that tone of music. Overall I thought “Rodeo” was amazing. It was something new that I never heard before and I really enjoyed listening to it. I recommend that anyone should give it a listen even if you do not enjoy like rap, I still think people would enjoy it.
