Young Sinatra IV (YSIV) Is Logic's Finest Work

Logic’s new album “Young Sinatra 4” is a beautiful piece of work that some critics are calling for as Logic’s best ever album. Others disagree, and even consider this to be an “un-Logic” album, as a few of his songs are much more mainstream than others. Comparatively, his old mixtapes “Under Pressure” and “The Incredible True Story” were fan-favorites and are arguably his finest work. Fans and critics tired quickly during many of his songs, including his 8 minute intro in which he picks up phone calls from fans all over the world thanking him for changing their lives.

Half of his songs are longer than or are very close to five minutes long, which for a rap album is unusual. Logic claims he is attempting to connect to his hip-hop side, and undeniably can rap for days, but as a hip-hop album it is not his finest work. He also attempts to connect to the Wu Tang clan, a popular hip-hop group in his song “Wu Tang Forever,” his opening verse he says, “Ayo, Wu-Tang forever/Who rhyme better?/We too clever, the boom bap’s back, harder than ever.” Also, in the beginnings of his upbeat song “ICONIC” feat. Jaden Smith, he says, “Shout out that boy Slim Shady for all the love.” Slim Shady is a reference to popular rap artist Eminem, and his alter ego that he would commonly rap under, for example when he raps in “My Name Is” on his album “Curtain Call.”

Popular music critics are good representations of how music analyzers are visualizing Logic’s new album, such as Alphonse Pierre writes in a Pitchfork article titled Logic Young Sinatra IV, “Logic can start off fine but will often delve into tiresome three-, four-, and even five-verse tracks going off on incomplete, uplifting rambles.” Pierre’s quote and Pitchfork’s 5.5/10 rating undeniably match up; Logic is a very talented musician, but this is definitely not his finest work in recent years.

Frank Sinatra 4 has many notable features throughout the album, including Jaden Smith and Hailee Steinfield. Logic has managed to secure two of the best names in the business, and it shows on his new album. Songs “Ordinary Day” and “ICONIC” are two of the best off of the album, and ICONIC is a spin-off of Jaden Smith’s ICON, one of the most popular songs of 2018. I am a huge fan of Logic’s album, I enjoy listening to it while doing homework or just driving around in the car.
