The city of Sammamish ranks highest nationally in median household income, according to the new 2018 income data produced annually by the U.S. Census Bureau. This is the first time that a Washington city has reached No. 1.

A community must have a population of at least 65,000 to count as a city in the U.S. Census, so this is the first year that Sammamish qualifies. With a median household income of $183,000, Sammamish ranked higher than the other 630 cities in America. The national median household income is only $62,000. Sammamish even beat California Bay Area cities, most notably San Ramon and Palo Alto, which ranked No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

Sammamish became the 19th census city in Washington this year, joining the income census along with Redmond, which ranked No. 11 in median household income.

This development is evidence of a larger trend towards higher household incomes in the Seattle Eastside because of the rise of technology companies. Four Washington cities, Sammamish, Redmond, Kirkland, and Bellevue, ranked higher than Seattle in this census.
