“Members Only, Vol. 4,” was released under the late XXXTENTACION’s name on Jan 23, on all music streaming services. XXX, whose real name is Jahseh Onfroy, died in June while on tour in Florida, after he was shot in his car. Members Only is a rap group based out of Florida that was originally formed by XXX and Ski Mask the Slump God in 2014, after they met in a juvenile detention center. While initially it was only XXX and Ski Mask, the group has expanded over the years and now has 22 members, 19 of which directly feature on this new album. With well over a year passing since “Members Only, Vol. 3” was released, the recent death of XXX seemed to spark the release of another album, as a tribute to one of the founding members of the group. Despite the controversy around XXX’s name for alleged crimes, the people in this album saw him for who they believed he really was, a great artist who affected rap music forever with his game changing styles.

Despite the album having 24 songs, and being released under his name, XXX is only featured on six songs, with “Sauce!” being the only solo track. “Sauce!” is by far the most popular song on the album, largely due to it being an XXX solo song, coming in at over 27 million streams, while the next most popular, “Make Eem Run!” has a little under nine million.

However, overall, the album is terrible. It lacks any real flow and the songs seem to have been rushed for the album’s release. Out of the 24 songs, there are only three worth mentioning, and even they are not that good, but they feature XXX himself with other artists. The first is “Sauce!” which, as previously mentioned, is the most popular song and the only track with just XXX. The song is nowhere near as good as his other solo work, but gets a lot of streams because it is only XXX, and the album was supposed to be a tribute to him. The next song is “Gassed Up!” which is an average song, but not one you would ever hear at a bar mitzvah, as it lacks a really nice beat and has a poor chorus, but, the rapping is decent. The final song to mention is “Make Eem Run!.” Like the two previously mentioned, it is nothing really all that special. The rap verses and beat are okay, but the chorus is oddly similar to “Gassed Up!.” The rest of the 21 songs are all bad, yet the rapping throughout the album is at least mediocre, and definitely the best part of a bad album. But the beats of almost all of the songs are poor, and they all seem to have a really weird flow, which makes the album as a whole awkward to listen to.

In terms of a rating, I would give the album as a whole a three out of ten. Having not listened to the other three Members Only albums, I have no idea how it compares to them, but this one is just so bad and seems to have been released to capitalize on XXX’s massive popularity that skyrocketed after his death. XXX’s mother, who has taken control of his estate, was accused for trying to make money off of her son’s death after the release of “SKINS” back in December, and I do not see her getting any less accusations after this release.
